Disclaimer: SD Mom’s Night Out did not receive any compensation for this post. We are working with Dishcrawl La Jolla to help moms the night out they deserve. Dischrawl donated two tickets to the Mother’s Day event to help promote Cravings by the Cove and one lucky mom won!

We can’t seem to get enough of La Jolla these days! It’s such a beautiful place for date night, mom’s night out or just hanging out at the beach. After all it is the jewel of San Diego.

On Wednesday, May 22, Dischcrawl is featuring Cravings by the Cove another reason to head to La Jolla and sample some delicious food at local restaurants. Cravings by the Cove will guide your taste buds through not one, not two, not three, but four scrumptious eateries in Downtown La Jolla. We’ve got a special promo code for you and your friends so keep reading.

What is a Dishcrawl?

First of all, you might be thinking, “what is a Dishcrawl?” If you’ve never been to a Dischcrawl before, or let alone ever heard of one here we’ll give you the low down. Dischcrawl Ambassador and event coordinator, Jaclyn Nerenberg describes the experience as a hybrid between a pubcrawl and San Diego Restaurant Week. Meet new people and sample three house specialties from four different eateries (that’s a total of 12 dishes if you do the math) all while traveling on foot. It’s an adventure in itself. What makes a Dischcrawl even more exciting is that the places are revealed as the event gets closer. What a way to keep you on your toes! Follow @DishcrawlLJ as they reveal their locations.

Event Details

When: Wednesday, May 22, 2013 from 7-9:30pm

Where: La Jolla, CA – All ticket holders will be notified of meeting location via email, 48 hours prior to the event.

Cost: $45/person – Use promo code “sdmoms” for 20% off you ticket. There are only seven left so act fast!
*Drinks not included in the ticket price. Drink specials and pairings may be available at discretion of the participating restaurant.

Click here to join the fun!

We were on San Diego Living on channel 6 the CW this week talking about ways to take care of mom. Joining us was preeclampsia survivor and award-winning volunteer, Becky Sloan, Evian Salon and Day Spa and Chef Michael of Roppongi Restaurant in La Jolla. Everyone talked about their part in the SD Mom’s Night Out Mother’s Day event on May 9th. Viewers learned about the Promise Walk in San Diego happening this Saturday, May 4th, enjoyed a cooking demo from Chef Michael as he showed us how to make ahi poke and got a preview of what mini spa treatments moms can experience at the event.

Some of the things we displayed on our table included:

Fresh fruit and weights to remind families to keep mom healthy. Forming healthy habits for the whole family can help get everyone on track. Dance & Company will be giving away a fitness punch card to help keep moms in shape!

A cozy pillow to remind dads and kids, that sometimes all mom really needs is a good nap or a good night’s rest. One lucky mom will win a night’s rest at Hotel La Jolla! Now wouldn’t that be the ultimate gift!

Breakfast in bed, present mom with a nice tray of anything in bed, add a framed note or picture and she will be a happy camper…as long as she really gets some sleep! Or get her a brand new custom mug with your favorite family photos by Creative Travel Mugs.

Natural cleaning products are not the gift, but a clean house is! Naked Clean will be giving away a free 3-hour cleaning at the Mother’s Day event. It is so important to relieve mom from chores and any duties on Mother’s Day, and at least a few times a month

Mom can always use a good DSLR camera. If she already has one, or if she doesn’t, a great gift is a certificate to The Mommarazzi School. A place where she can learn how-to use her camera with her friends in a fun and interactive setting.

Finally, you can’t go wrong with chocolate and wine! Chuao (chew + wow) chocolatier has a wide variety of delicious artisan chocolates. They will be teaming up with Constellation Brands to do a chocolate and wine pairing at the Mother’s Day event. You won’t want to miss it!

What Real San Diego Moms Want for Mother’s Day

“Let Mom sleep in, bring her coffee and breakfast in bed, take her car in for a detailed wash and then be sure to light some candles for her while she takes a bubble bath and sips on wine while reading her favorite book. That’s all any Mom wants, right?!? -Sondra Santos Drahos, Happy Healthy Hip Parenting

“Take something off my To Do list or make the day Pretend Mom Isn’t Here Day and be self sufficient.” -Melanie Sheridan, Mel, A Dramatic Mommy

“Fix all the meals. Pour all the milks and change all the diapers for the day.” -Jennifer Burton Dunlap, Day Drinking and Diaper Changing

“I just ask that the kids do their best not to fight with each other and not to things to make me yell at them (Is that too much to ask?) It’s gotta be best behavior day!” – Melissa Ramos Hiatt, Making it Sweet

Date night has always been at the top of my list. My husband and I used to date a lot before we had kids. I’m sure many of you can relate to this sentence, “after we had our first child, it was a lot more challenging to plan a date night, let alone find some time to ourselves.” That was us and for what seemed like the longest date night drought in history, we finally were able to be consistent with a bi-weekly outing which lasted for quite some time. My family helped watch my baby girl of course and I am so grateful for that. Sometimes we’d take her along and that was okay. Some nights we just had coffee before picking her up after work, that counted. Any excuse to refill our love banks. After I became pregnant again, things got a little crazy. I longed for the days we used to spend hours talking about the past, the present and the future, and just exploring San Diego or taking a mini vacation on a whim. Last month though, Roppongi Restaurant in La Jolla gave us the best date night we’ve had in a long time when they launched Parent’s Night Out in partner with Cups La Jolla. You can have one too! Keep reading.

Roppongi and Cups make parent’s night out simple. You one price for dinner for two and even your child, or children. Drop off child before dinner at Cups (hardly a block away) where they enjoy a fun evening making cupcakes and pizza with Sammy’s Pizza Kits. Your investment, $120 (not including tax and gratuity, each additional child is $20). Mydaughter is still not comfortable being on her own yet, so we opted to pick up a cupcake to bring home for her which we all shared the next day.

You might be thinking that’s quite a bit to spend in one night, and although I received a complimentary meal…all that aside, I would do it all over again and pay for it. The time I enjoyed reconnecting with my husband, sitting down with him while being served a 3-course meal in an intimate setting in La Jolla was priceless. I could tell he missed our time alone together too because for the first time in a long time, he did all the talking. He opened up to me about things he probably was too distracted to talk about at home, and I was just happy to sit there and listen. It felt good to know that I was able to encourage my husband and be there for him.

Other than good conversation and reconnecting was of the amazing food I could enjoy without little hands picking at it. The prix-fixe Parent’s Night Out menu was delicious. You are given two options for each course, and we decided to sample it all. We even ventured off and ordered an additional appetizer that happened to be a hit, miso encrusted eggplant! Here is a glimpse of what we feasted on. Click here to see the full menu.

One rule I have about date night is to not be afraid to try something new. The chef was passing out little cups of split pea soup topped with bacon. I gobbled it up and I hate peas. For dessert there was a last minute change on the menu. Instead of a persimmon crisp, since persimmons were out of season, the chef created an apple crisp with papaya and green tea ice cream on top. I hate papaya, and I again gobbled the crisp up until there was nothing left.

Our overall experience at Roppongi was delightful, from the ambiance to the customer service , the food and most especially our time together.

I hope you will consider participating in Parent’s Night Out at Roppongi Restaurant! I tell you, it will be worth it. After all, you deserve it and you owe it to yourself and your lover to spend some time together.

Parent’s Night Out is scheduled for every 4th Saturday of the month. The next one will be on Saturday, April 27. Get your reservations in ASAP as space is limited.

May is Preeclampsia Awareness Month. You may or may not of heard of this serious condition that affects both mother and unborn baby. But you may not have heard about how serious a condition it can be. SD Mom’s Night Out interviews Becky Sloan, Preeclampsia Survivor & Volunteer for Preeclampsia Foundation. We are thankful that Becky is alive to share her story in hopes you will too so others will be aware of the dangers of preeclampsia. She is an award-winning volunteer and has truly taken The Promise Walks to a new level over the past few years by helping add new cities to the map as the foundation’s National Walk Director Volunteer. Becky is very grateful for her family, her husband especially who stuck by her side every step of the way. Without further adieu, Becky.

Tell us about yourself. How many kids do you have? What do you do?

I am happily married for nine years and I have two children; Jacob who is 8 and Brynn who is 4 ½. I am a scientific administrative assistant to a neurological disease research lab at The Scripps Research Institute and a Volunteer for the Preeclampsia Foundation. I also have my teaching credential and intended to be an elementary teacher, but October 30, 2004 changed my life forever.

What was your experience with preeclampsia?

In my first pregnancy I began experiencing face and body swelling and headaches at 22 weeks. These symptoms, along with extreme weight gain, bouts of high blood pressure, and lower fetal movement continued until 31 weeks. My doctor was never concerned with my symptoms and told me that ‘if I didn’t stop eating so much, I would gain 70 lbs. before the pregnancy was over.’ I didn’t make it out of the office before I burst into tears. I felt awful, like no one cared how I felt, and I still had no idea what preeclampsia was because the signs and symptoms were never mentioned to me. I was never diagnosed with anything more than ‘being a first time worried mom.’

I had a doctor’s appointment when I was just one day shy of 32 weeks and despite my excruciating headache I was sent home and told to continue to take Tylenol. Later that evening I was home alone, and could no longer take the head pain. I called labor and delivery to ask for help and was told I needed to go to the hospital to be assessed. I somehow had enough sense to know that things were not right and that I shouldn’t wait for a ride. Luckily I didn’t wait, because if I had waited for a ride from a friend or even an ambulance I don’t think I would be here today. Eleven short minutes after my arrival at the hospital, I went into code blue eclamptic seizures and lost consciousness. My husband didn’t have a cell phone at the time, so I had no way to contact him. He came home to a post-it note on our door that said I had gone to the hospital. He had no idea what he was about to face: three hours of not knowing if his new wife and baby would survive this ordeal. I am happy to say WE both did! On October 30, 2004, our son, Jacob William, was born two months premature due to severe preeclampsia, and surprisingly neither one of us had any lasting health issues. We have since been blessed with a baby girl, Brynn Holland, in 2008. I experienced the sudden onset of preeclampsia and was in the first stages of HELLP Syndrome (H -hemolysis, which is the breaking down of red blood cells, E-elevated liver enzymes and LP – low platelet count) when Brynn was delivered immediately on the same day of diagnosis at 36 weeks.

Our family is one of the lucky ones and unfortunately I have made too many friends who have lost a baby, wife, sister, cousin, aunt, or niece because of preeclampsia. I beat some great odds to survive my ordeal but even greater odds with my son surviving as well. I know just how lucky I am.

How do you know if you have preeclampsia?

Preeclampsia is often silent, showing up unexpectedly during a routine blood pressure check and urine test. In cases like this, if the baby is considered “term” (on or after 37 weeks) and the growth rate considered normal, the baby is delivered, and the mother monitored and sent home as usual.

The impact of preeclampsia is more profound if it occurs earlier in the pregnancy, or in a woman who had high blood pressure before pregnancy. Care providers may recommend time off work, bed rest, medication and even hospitalization to keep the blood pressure under control. Keeping the baby in-utero as long as possible, assuming growth continues is preferred for the long-term health of the baby.

Unfortunately, the only “cure” for the disease begins with delivery of the baby and placenta, which is sometimes recommended before the pregnancy goes to term in the best interest of the mother. Doctors may prescribe anti-hypertensive medications. If the blood pressure cannot be managed with medication and treatment, and the mother’s and/or baby’s health is at risk, the mother may be given steroids to aid the maturation of the infant’s lungs prior to delivering the baby.
*The above is taken directly from www.preeclampsia.org.

A wise friend of mine who lost her son to preeclampsia once said the best advice about preeclampsia is “Don’t judge your case of preeclampsia by a friend of a friend of a friend.”

Know the symptoms. Trust yourself. -the Preeclampsia Foundation mantra. I wish I had known these two simple sentences in my first pregnancy.

How did you get involved with Promise Walk San Diego?

I got involved by searching for answers as to why I almost died having my first child; since the only answer I got from my doctor was ‘your case was a fluke’. I still had no idea what happened to me and the longer I waited, the more depressed I became feeling like I did something wrong to create the situation that almost took my life and my son’s life.

Tell us about Promise Walk San Diego and the Preeclampsia Foundation.

Thousands of women and babies die or get very sick each year from preeclampsia, a life-threatening disorder that occurs only during pregnancy and the postpartum period. The Preeclampsia Foundation is an empowered community of patients and experts, with a diverse array of resources and support to help mothers have the best possible pregnancy. The Foundation provides unparalleled support and advocacy for the people whose lives have been or will be affected by the condition – mothers, babies, fathers and their families. They are steadfast in their resolve to improve diagnosis, management and prevention of preeclampsia through research and improved health care practices. In the meantime, because all pregnancies are at risk, the best defense against the worst outcomes is to ensure patients understand and appropriately respond to the warning signs of preeclampsia. The problem is, few people are aware and adequately informed.

The Promise Walk for Preeclampsia™ supports the mission of the Preeclampsia Foundation as they provide patient support and education, raise public awareness, catalyze research and improve health care practices for millions of mothers and their babies every year who are impacted by preeclampsia and related hypertensive disorders of pregnancy. The Promise Walks are coordinated by volunteers and for every dollar raised 92 cents goes back into the mission of the Foundation.

How can we help spread the word so mother’s can become aware?

By talking about preeclampsia, how serious of a condition it can be. Too few know the reality and impact of preeclampsia, a life-threatening disorder of pregnancy that affects both the mother and the unborn baby. Yet preeclampsia is not rare: It happens in as many as one in 12 pregnancies. There are many moms who have had preeclampsia but brush it off, not realizing the danger that is lurking after a mild diagnose or no diagnose at all. Since every pregnancy is different, ALL women need to be aware, even if you think you won’t be the one it picks to affect. Besides, it is the gift that keeps giving, even having a mild case of preeclampsia sets you up for a life long heart to heart (literally) with your doctor to ensure you do not develop heart disease. Women who have had preeclampsia have approximately double the risk for heart disease and stroke over their

next five to 15 years. Spreading this statistic is vitally important as well. My doctor never mentioned this factor to me at my six-week check up appointment.

When is your next event?

Our next event will be the May 2014 San Diego Walk, but are still taking donations (100% tax deductible) through July for this year’s walk that will happen on Saturday, May 4th. We are continually spreading awareness, posting volunteer opportunities and networking through our Facebook page throughout the year. Come over and like us and follow us on Twitter!
